2D Design
I wanted to design a pattern that had a retro feel but with a modern look. Using fractals I could give the product a geometric 70’s feel with a modern twist. Doing it all on digital programs made this much easier to match up as there was less cleaning up needed on Photoshop. This is a very strong pattern and would accommodate a feature wall also a piece of modern art in its own right.
The more I have researched into interior and home appliance design, the more I can see that Retro has a strong place in the market. The pattern has to be a repeat pattern design, tessellating and repeat patterns worked best for use as wallpaper and interior design. I did find this hard on the mixed media matching up the pattern took a lot of time on Photoshop and the lack of an up to date laptop made the process even slower when rendering images. The cost of printing on gloss was an issue but I do feel that it is worth it for the end result, the image is much clearer and crisper. I had Just over a month to complete, I do feel with more time I could of produced some interesting patterns with the mix of fractals and Photoshop. I tend to submerge myself in my work finding new ways to express myself in my work and yet still accommodating for the diversity of the public.
My teacup design was Fun to do. I enjoyed the Photoshop work and building on layers to incorporate a mixed media Piece as a background. It did however take some time to clean up on Photoshop due to smudge marks made when originally drawing the design in pencil. I wanted it to have a retro feel from the 50's, a modern take on teacups pattern taken from the archives of legendary American fabric designer Vera Neumann but up to date with the mix of the cupcakes that seem to be everywhere.
My flower pattern was inspired firstly, from a memory from my childhood there was big clematis with purple¬ blue flowers over an arch. Most recently a sample card I found in my research at the scrap store, it is a Mulberry design. After more research on the internet I found its name; it is called Anastasia from Collection Grandiflora Ii (Red/Gold). The composition is of Silk and Linen with a repeat of 76.0cm (30"). The suggested usage is for curtains and bedspreads. This influenced the final flower design, I wanted to fill in all the space with the plant and not have many gaps to recreate the rich expensive intricate design by Mulberry.
This design took a lot of time to match up as my scanner was not working therefore, I had to take a photograph. The perspective was off so I had to fix this on Photoshop. There was far less cleaning up to do as I used a biro and there was no pencil smudges. All of my designs could be used in fashion, interior design i.e. wallpaper, upholstery and soft furnishings.

All my designs could be sold in John Lewis as there is a wide range of styles as seen below from Floral to Retro and modern takes on old styles . They have a wide range of prices that can support Multi ~coloured patterns.
