How we see colour.

The Retina contains Rods and Cones, the Rods and Cones are sensitive to different light colours.
Cones function best in bright light, they are concentrated in the center of the Retina.
Rods are more sensitive in dim/low light.

History of colour.
Black.
From prehistoric times there are drawings on cave walls using Carbon/Charcoal. Carbon Black was the first black. Another black was Vine Black which was made by charring grape vine stems, this produces bluish blacks. The darkest prehistoric black is Bone Black this was made from burnt bones and was the deepest available black at its time.

Emotions and symbolism.
Black represents authority, humility, rebellion, poverty and wealth. Black also signifies power, mystery, sorrow and absence.
Black is mysterious and evokes the unknown and fear (Black holes , Black death, Blacklist).
Black mixed with bright colours like red, orange and other bright powerful colours produce a very powerful colour scheme.
Black is an aggressive colour scheme, black also gives the appearance of depth and perspective.
Blue is the colour of the sea, sky and is associated with well being and calmness. Blue represents health, understanding, knowledge, loyalty, heaven, faith and truth. Blue flowers like violets and forget-me-not's symbolize faithfulness.
Blue suppresses appetite, blue is a masculine colour. Blue mixed with warm colours like red or yellow have a high impact/perfect scheme for a superhero.
Experimenting with colour .
Mood boards.
Tissue paper .
Emotive colour combination.
Ethereal presence. Depth. Structure. Space. Electricity. Life. Organic.
Sharp. Angles .
Using the leftover dyed tissue paper on photoshop and extracted interesting pieces of the dyed tissue and made two digital collages. I am pleased with the result and will be experimenting some more with importing textures made and creating an aesthetically pleasing image.

I have enjoyed experimenting with colour and I have learnt a lot about colour and myself in the process. I tend to hold my anger inside and it comes out in my work, I did three paintings that represented negative feeling ( below )
Experimenting with movement, texture, colour and tone. Experimenting with different mediums ,acrylic paint, ink , PVA glue, melted wax crayons, pastels, coloured chalks, and produced different textures with fine plastic netting and adhesive.
This piece has been made by soaking the paper with a sodden sponge and then applying printer ink and watered down acrylic paint to the paper with a pipette, this allowed the ink and paint to move and spread over the surface of the paper freely. This did take some time to dry before I could start on highlights and depth. This piece evokes an ethereal mood also reminiscent of a nebula, space and the chaotic movement of life.
Attempting to recreate the colours of my garden .
Mixing the correct colour to recreate this was very challenging, more time and practice is necessary for me to fully understand colour.
Pablo Picasso.
Blue Period
(1901-1904)
(1901-1904)
Jaime Sabartes, Picasso's closest friend at the time, wrote:
“Picasso believed Art to the son of Sadness and Suffering… that sadness lent itself to meditation and that suffering was fundamental to life… If we demand sincerity of an artist, we must remember that sincerity is not to be found outside the realm of grief.” Picasso was in Paris far from home and family, Picasso was unrecognized and in extreme poverty this is apparent in his somber tones of this period. |
Mark rothko.
Rothko used colour to symbolise emotions, Rothko's paintings are about birth and death, on one level and the tragedy of this spiritual quest is perhaps enhanced for Rothko's being a Russian Jewish immigrant who never fully felt at home in the world of Art or the U.S. His own sense of isolation, initially deriving from his inability to speak to English. Birth and death, happy and sad; there are all emotions that can be portrayed in a painting and Rothko demonstrates this well.
There does not have to be a blue sky and a big red sun to have to signify heat you can do this with colour alone and without structure
Soco Freire.
Soco Freire.
Born in Brazil started her career as an artist in 1996.
Influenced by her father a graphic design, Soco started experimenting with sponges and texturing tools, she developed her own style and technique.
Soco's inspiration comes from moments and experiences in life , positive feelings and emotions.
I find myself going on a journey of colours, feelings and movement when I look at Soco's work.
This module has developed my understanding of colour and how it can evoke an emotional response and has encouraged me to experiment with the use of colour to recrate a feeling or an emotion into my work.
